Chelsea Clinton to be Honored at the New-York Historical Society’s Annual Strawberry Festival

NEW YORK, March 13, 2012 — /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The New-York Historical Society will present Chelsea Clinton with the History Makers Medal on Tuesday, May 8, as it holds its annual Strawberry Festival benefit luncheon. The event, celebrating women in philanthropy, will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the New-York Historical Society, 170 Central Park West at 77th Street.

Lesley Stahl, 60 Minutes News Correspondent, will make special introductory remarks and Dolley Madison biographer Catherine Allgor will make keynote remarks in commemoration of the bicentennial of the War of 1812.

Ms. Clinton joins a list of outstanding women who have been honored at the Strawberry Festival. Past recipients of the distinguished service award include Hillary Clinton, Kirsten Gillibrand, Michelle Obama, Anna Quindlen, Lesley Stahl, Christine Quinn and Wendy Wasserstein.

Chelsea Clinton has worked at McKinsey & Company and Avenue Capital and studied at Stanford, Oxford and Columbia universities. She is currently pursuing a doctorate at Oxford, working at New York University and working with the Clinton Foundation and the Clinton Global Initiative. Her recent professional and academic work, including her publications, has focused on questions of how to improve access around the world to relatively low-cost, high-quality health care services for both acute and chronic needs, and on more holistic questions of empowerment and equal rights (in areas including health and the arts), particularly with concern to children. Chelsea Clinton currently serves on the boards of the Clinton Foundation, the School of American Ballet, Common Sense Media and the Weill Cornell Medical College. The first recorded gathering of the New-York Historical Society’s Strawberry Festival was on June 15, 1856, in Washington Square Park, where guests enjoyed a stimulating lecture and a strawberry feast. Bill Clinton and his daughter participate in an evening of Muslim-Jewish understanding

While the former U.S. president’s daughter advocates interfaith cooperation inside the JCC, protesters gather outside demanding an apology for the creation of programs that bring together members of mosques and synagogues.

Referring to several dozen anti-Muslim protestors who turned up outside the JCC with signs denouncing the dialogue and demanding that Schneier “apologize to the Jewish community” for creating programs that bring together members of mosques and synagogues in the U.S. and around the world through the agency he founded, The Foundation for Ethnic Understanding, Chelsea Clinton said, “We are being protested, which shows we are having an important conversation.”

Referring to series of rhetorical attacks on Muslims here over the past several years in the media and by prominent politicians including the outcry in 2010 against plans to build a mosque several blocks from the World Trade Center, Chelsea Clinton added, “We are very concerned about the anti-Muslim stereotyping. We need to hold our politicians and those of us in the media to a certain level of discourse.”

Schneier, an Orthodox rabbi who is the spiritual leader of a large synagogue in the Hamptons and vice president of the World Jewish Congress, told the audience, “I believe that as a Jew and a rabbi I have a responsibility to speak out against anti-Muslim bigotry and discrimination, just as I expect my Muslim brothers and sisters to speak out against anti-Semitism.”

Noting that prominent American Muslim leaders have repeatedly denounced Holocaust denial and had issued an appeal to Hamas to free the then-captured Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit two months before his liberation, Schneier said, “I am proud that we have moved beyond dialogue to actually fighting for the rights of the other.”

Imam Shamsi Ali, the former spiritual leader of the Islamic Cultural Center of New York, who was chosen by New York Magazine as one of the seven most influential religious leaders in New York, said both Muslims and Jews need to look beyond negative stereotypes of each other to strengthen people-to-people ties. Noting that the term “jihad” is often misconstrued in the media to mean exclusively violence against non-Muslims, Imam Ali said, “In fact we are now engaged in a jihad for peace and for cooperation between people of all backgrounds.”

Responding to recent revelations that the New York Police Department has spied extensively on worshippers in mosques and on Muslim student groups, Imam Ali expressed disagreement with widespread calls for the resignation of NYPD chief Ray Kelly; stating, “People in the Muslim community are deeply concerned about this, but instead of demanding (Kelly’s) resignation, we need to engage the NYPD to put procedures into place so that it consults with Muslim leaders on an ongoing basis.”

Chelsea Clinton Attends Guns N’ Roses Show To Celebrate The End Of Fashion Week

She’s no stranger to civic fashion events, but this time, Chelsea Clinton left politics behind when she attended the Guns N’ Roses’ Fashion Week finale show last night.

Chelsea, along with her husband Marc Mezvinsky, joined the likes of Matt Damon, Sienna Miller and a very scruffy, beanie-hat-wearing Justin Timberlake at the HIRO Ballroom to bid adieu to New York’s Fashion Week.

Perhaps Chelsea could have needed a little pick me up after another report on “Rock Center With Brian Williams” on Wednesday night.

Regardless, Clinton looked gracefully casual, donning a grey t-shirt and black cardigan as the famed rock band played well into the night.

KIEV, Ukraine — Chelsea Clinton is urging young Ukrainians to engage in philanthropy and civic activism.

The daughter of former U.S. President Bill Clinton and current Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton told a group of Ukrainian university students in Kiev Tuesday that being engaged in the world is “part of being a good person.”

The 31-year-old Clinton said there is always a gap between what the government and the private sector can provide, and that gap must be filled by the work of charity and non-governmental organizations.

Clinton is pursuing a doctorate at Oxford and does philanthropic work for the Clinton Foundation and Clinton Global Initiative. She recently took up a job as a correspondent for the U.S. television network NBC.

Indian Wells —Championing her father’s cause, Chelsea Clinton on Tuesday touted local school systems as “precious valuable resources” in the fight to curb diabetes and childhood obesity.

Clinton pointed out that the average student will spend 12,000 to 15,000 hours in school before graduating from high school, yet only a fraction get regular physical education and recess like she did when she attended public schools in Arkansas in the 1980s.

“We now know unequivocally that diabetes — more than socioeconomic status, more than race, more than gender — is a larger hindrance on whether or not a kid will graduate from high school on time,” Clinton said.

“This now is becoming not only a real public health threat but an existential question for who we are as a country and what we value.”

Clinton, 31, the daughter of former President Bill Clinton and current Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, moderated a nearly hour-long panel discussion on healthy schools as part of the Health Matters conference.

The event was held at the Renaissance Esmeralda resort.

Unlike her gregarious father, the notoriously guarded Clinton shared no personal stories during the event.

Instead, she directed the questions that came in through Twitter and Facebook to the five other panelists.

Clinton didn’t even chime in when someone asked about how children could motivate their parents to make healthier choices, even though the president has credited his daughter for inspiring his newfound vegan diet.

The panelists also addressed low-cost ideas that could easily be implemented into the school day, including having students celebrate birthdays with 15 minutes of extra recess instead of cupcakes.

“This generation of American children may just be the first ones to live sicker and die younger than the generations previous to them,” said Dwayne Proctor, senior program officer at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, a Princeton, N.J.- based philanthropic organization.

“By making this noise, we’re starting to see that a lot of folks are standing up and paying attention to this issue.”

Clinton said she recently toured a Brooklyn school where students who do well on essays and spelling tests now get red apple stickers instead of gold stars.

“I’ve thought a lot about that,” she told the crowd.

“It’s something that seems rather banal, but actually conveys a really profound message: That your academic health relates to your physical health and mental health … and also that this is something that we value.”

In addition to her work with the William J. Clinton Foundation, Clinton is pursuing a doctorate at Oxford University and is serving as a special correspondent for NBC News.

She debuted on TV in December to mixed reviews. According to several reports, Clinton has not decided whether to stay with the network beyond her 90-day contract.

Haiti has done remarkably well considering victims of Hurricane Katrina are still digging out and rebuilding 8 yrs after a devastating hurricane left thousands of gulf coast residents homeless.

President Clinton has always held a special place in his heart for Haiti, as he and Mrs. Clinton visited there as newly weds when a wedding gift included a trip to Haiti in 1975.

“When Bill Clinton married Hillary Rodham in 1975, a friend gave them a trip to Haiti. Since that honeymoon vacation, the Caribbean island nation has held a life-long allure for the couple, a place they found at once desperate and enchanting, pulling at their emotions throughout his presidency and in her maiden year as secretary of state.

With the world’s attention now trained on the devastated Haitian capital, rebuilding the country will be a central part of Bill and Hillary Clinton’s lives going forward. And for the 42nd president, the catastrophe offers the opportunity to fulfill whatever unrealized ambitions he has for the long-suffering nation.

“This is a personal thing for us,” Bill Clinton said in a interview Thursday. He said he and his wife have “always felt a special responsibility” for Haiti and its 9 million people. “She has the same memories I do. She has the same concerns I do. We love the place.”

On that first trip in December 1975, Clinton said he and his wife watched as a wreath was placed at the national monument to celebrate Haitian Independence Day. They toured the old hotel where the writer Ernest Hemingway once stayed and visited a voodoo high priest dressed in all white. They sat in a lonely pew of the Port-au-Prince National Cathedral, which lies in ruin following Tuesday’s earthquake.

“We just became fascinated with the country,” Bill Clinton said by telephone from his charitable foundation’s office in New York. “We followed all its ups and downs.”

The Clintons’ enthrallment has lasted for more than 30 years. They decorated their homes with Haitian art. They flew back again and again. Hillary Clinton once said that theirs was a “Haiti-obsessed family.” At a dinner in Rwanda with African leaders in 2008, Bill Clinton talked more about Haiti than Rwanda.

When the Clintons learned that sites in Port-au-Prince they had visited as tourists were destroyed in the earthquake and locals they had come to know were injured or unaccounted for, Bill Clinton said he was “personally emotionally affected.” His wife, he said, became “physically sick.”

The Clintons are at the center of the global relief effort. Bill Clinton is the U.N. special envoy to Haiti and, together with former president George W. Bush, is leading America’s humanitarian and long-term recovery efforts in Haiti. Hillary Clinton is among the top officials responsible for the nation’s work aiding Haiti and its paralyzed government, and plans to fly there Saturday. “The two agencies in the world that can run these things are the United States and the United Nations, and the Clintons sit atop this package,” said former senator Tim Wirth, president of the U.N. Foundation.

Three months into her term last spring, Hillary Clinton addressed the Haiti Donors Conference in Washington, where she spoke of her family’s “deep commitment to Haiti and the people of Haiti.” She told of visiting the Haitian town of Pignon as first lady, meeting a country doctor who ran a health, women’s literacy and micro-credit center to help his countrymen gain a foothold in the global economy.

“For some of us, Haiti is a neighbor and, for others of us, it is a place of historic and cultural ties,” Clinton said. “But for all of us, it is now a test of resolve and commitment.”

Chelsea Clinton exits shadows with US television job

NEW YORK — Chelsea Clinton, the only child of America’s most famous political couple, on Monday will abandon her once-cherished privacy, making a debut with a high-profile role on national television.

At 31, Clinton has largely avoided the glare of public scrutiny that her parents, former president Bill Clinton and current Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, not only endure, but court.

That will change when she pops up on NBC as a special correspondent on the show “Rock Center with Brian Williams” and on the channel’s nightly news.

But for her first foray into the polarized world of the US media, viewers should not expect to see Chelsea Clinton delving deep into sensitive political issues.

On “Rock Center,” she will “highlight stories within the ‘Making a Difference’ franchise,” NBC said in a statement.

The first contribution in this series, which focuses on inspirational people, will cover Annette Dove, who runs a charity in Arkansas — Bill Clinton’s home state — for neglected and often severely poor children.

“In my work at NBC specifically, I hope to highlight stories of people who are both making a positive difference in their communities and our world,” Clinton told The New York Times.

For many viewers, though, the chief interest could be seeing and hearing someone who until now had taken great pains to stay out of the limelight, even as her parents became one of the most famous couples in the world.

A high-flying student at Stanford, Oxford and Columbia universities, the young Clinton has avoided the gossip pages, barring a media frenzy over her marriage in July 2010 to a little known hedge fund employee, Mark Mezvinsky.

But now she appears ready to embrace stardom. On Wednesday she will also host PBS’s live broadcast of “The Nutcracker” ballet being staged at the Lincoln Center in New York.

Last month Chelsea accompanied her father at the New York Historical Society for a public conversation about his latest book. She also helped organize a 65th birthday event for the ex-president, raising money for his foundation.

Chelsea’s Facebook page went up in September listing her causes as women, children, health, education, the Clinton Foundation, as well as her late grandmother Dorothy Rodham, who had urged her to take part in public life.

Friends have spoken of Chelsea Clinton as a smart and warm person, much like her father. However, not everyone is happy with her new persona.

Journalists who got to know her when she accompanied her mother during her failed 2008 bid to become Democratic nominee for the presidency have written on Twitter about her aloofness and apparent dislike for the media machine she is now joining.

Other reporters have griped that she was able to secure the NBC job thanks to the Clinton name, much as former president George W. Bush’s daughter Jenna Bush Hager landed work at the NBC’s Today show, and Meghan McCain, daughter of 2008 presidential candidate John McCain, works with MSNBC.

Steve Capus, president of NBC News, however, said Clinton “is a remarkable woman…. Given her vast experiences, it’s as though Chelsea has been preparing for this opportunity her entire life.”

The question likely to grow now is whether Clinton really wants a media career or whether this will be a stepping stone into politics once her parents leave the stage.

Nov. 29 (Bloomberg) — Ex-Goldman Sachs Group Inc. proprietary traders Bennett Grau and Mark Mallon are teaming up with former colleague Marc Mezvinsky to start a hedge fund, according to a person with knowledge of their plans.

The three are raising money for their new firm, Eaglevale Partners LP, which plans to start trading in the first half of 2012, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the information is private. The fund will employ a global macro strategy, seeking to profit from economic trends by trading securities from bonds to commodities.

Mezvinsky, 33, who last year married Chelsea Clinton, 31, used to work with Grau and Mallon at Goldman Sachs’s global macro proprietary-trading group before he left in 2008 for investment firm 3G Capital Inc. The three join Morgan Sze and Pierre-Henri Flamand, former heads of Goldman Sachs’s global principal strategies proprietary group, who each started their own hedge funds in Hong Kong and London in the past year.

“Those from high-profile prop desks seem to have an edge over their competition in attracting assets,” said Don Steinbrugge, managing partner of Agecroft Partners LLC, a Richmond, Virginia-based firm that advises hedge funds and investors.

Jonathan Gasthalter, a spokesman for Eaglevale based in New York, declined to comment.
