Chelsea Clinton…on “Making a Difference”…

December 12, 2011

Chelsea Clinton exits shadows with US television job

By Brigitte Dusseau (AFP) –

NEW YORK — Chelsea Clinton, the only child of America’s most famous political couple, on Monday will abandon her once-cherished privacy, making a debut with a high-profile role on national television.

At 31, Clinton has largely avoided the glare of public scrutiny that her parents, former president Bill Clinton and current Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, not only endure, but court.

That will change when she pops up on NBC as a special correspondent on the show “Rock Center with Brian Williams” and on the channel’s nightly news.

But for her first foray into the polarized world of the US media, viewers should not expect to see Chelsea Clinton delving deep into sensitive political issues.

On “Rock Center,” she will “highlight stories within the ‘Making a Difference’ franchise,” NBC said in a statement.

The first contribution in this series, which focuses on inspirational people, will cover Annette Dove, who runs a charity in Arkansas — Bill Clinton’s home state — for neglected and often severely poor children.

“In my work at NBC specifically, I hope to highlight stories of people who are both making a positive difference in their communities and our world,” Clinton told The New York Times.

For many viewers, though, the chief interest could be seeing and hearing someone who until now had taken great pains to stay out of the limelight, even as her parents became one of the most famous couples in the world.

A high-flying student at Stanford, Oxford and Columbia universities, the young Clinton has avoided the gossip pages, barring a media frenzy over her marriage in July 2010 to a little known hedge fund employee, Mark Mezvinsky.

But now she appears ready to embrace stardom. On Wednesday she will also host PBS’s live broadcast of “The Nutcracker” ballet being staged at the Lincoln Center in New York.

Last month Chelsea accompanied her father at the New York Historical Society for a public conversation about his latest book. She also helped organize a 65th birthday event for the ex-president, raising money for his foundation.

Chelsea’s Facebook page went up in September listing her causes as women, children, health, education, the Clinton Foundation, as well as her late grandmother Dorothy Rodham, who had urged her to take part in public life.

Friends have spoken of Chelsea Clinton as a smart and warm person, much like her father. However, not everyone is happy with her new persona.

Journalists who got to know her when she accompanied her mother during her failed 2008 bid to become Democratic nominee for the presidency have written on Twitter about her aloofness and apparent dislike for the media machine she is now joining.

Other reporters have griped that she was able to secure the NBC job thanks to the Clinton name, much as former president George W. Bush’s daughter Jenna Bush Hager landed work at the NBC’s Today show, and Meghan McCain, daughter of 2008 presidential candidate John McCain, works with MSNBC.

Steve Capus, president of NBC News, however, said Clinton “is a remarkable woman…. Given her vast experiences, it’s as though Chelsea has been preparing for this opportunity her entire life.”

The question likely to grow now is whether Clinton really wants a media career or whether this will be a stepping stone into politics once her parents leave the stage.

Nov. 29 (Bloomberg) — Ex-Goldman Sachs Group Inc. proprietary traders Bennett Grau and Mark Mallon are teaming up with former colleague Marc Mezvinsky to start a hedge fund, according to a person with knowledge of their plans.

The three are raising money for their new firm, Eaglevale Partners LP, which plans to start trading in the first half of 2012, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the information is private. The fund will employ a global macro strategy, seeking to profit from economic trends by trading securities from bonds to commodities.

Mezvinsky, 33, who last year married Chelsea Clinton, 31, used to work with Grau and Mallon at Goldman Sachs’s global macro proprietary-trading group before he left in 2008 for investment firm 3G Capital Inc. The three join Morgan Sze and Pierre-Henri Flamand, former heads of Goldman Sachs’s global principal strategies proprietary group, who each started their own hedge funds in Hong Kong and London in the past year.

“Those from high-profile prop desks seem to have an edge over their competition in attracting assets,” said Don Steinbrugge, managing partner of Agecroft Partners LLC, a Richmond, Virginia-based firm that advises hedge funds and investors.

Jonathan Gasthalter, a spokesman for Eaglevale based in New York, declined to comment.

……………

Congratulations to you too, Chelsea.  Best of Luck in your new venture…

I know Marc’s company will be successful-

Bill Clinton Receives ‘Champion Of Peace’ Award For Work Supporting Women

November 20, 2011

Former President Bill Clinton joked as he accepted an award Thursday night, thanking supporters of women’s causes for trying to offset the mistakes of men.

Joking aside, Clinton accepted the Champion of Peace award at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Women For Women International, an organization that helps women survivors of war to rebuild their lives, presented him with the honor at its annual gala.

Clinton received the award for supporting women and girls through the Clinton Global Initiative. The initiative and its partners have created financial independence for women and girls in third world countries, worked to reduce maternal mortality and helped create sustainable careers, among other efforts.

“[Clinton's] personal passion and commitment on the issue has touched many hearts and led to much action and his dedication to bringing real change has led to solid impact on women’s wellbeing through corporations and NGOs action,” Women for Women states on its site.

The former president called for both the continued empowerment of women as well as “the liberation of men” from their role as aggressors throughout history, urging a new cultural understanding of what power — and empowerment — looks like.

“What [we're] trying to do here is change the behavior of history,” Clinton said. “If we do it together, we’ll still make some mistakes, but we’ll still be stumbling in the right direction.”

Clinton, who was accompanied by his daughter, Chelsea, spoke of the strong women in his own life. He applauded the organizers and the attendants for the work that has been done, but pushed for progress in global health and education. He cited high HIV rates in women, maternal safety, and access to education as just some of the many inequalities still facing women.

Zainab Salbi, the founder of Women For Women International, presented the award to the former president during the annual gala dinner. She was honored by Clinton during his administration for her work in Bosnia.

Salbi, an Iraqi refugee, founded the initiative in 1993 while working with women in wartorn Bosnia and Herzegovina. In its 18 years, the organization has distributed more than $103 million in direct aid, micro credit loans, and has impacted more than 1.7 million family members around the world.

The Champion of Peace Award is given annually by the organization. Past recipients have included musician Mary J. Blige and Jennifer and Peter Buffett.

Rememberance Honoring Dorothy Howell Rodham:

November 3, 2011

Rest in Peace- June 4, 1919 - November 1, 2011

Clinton Foundation Statement official press release:

“Dorothy Howell Rodham was born in Chicago on June 4, 1919 and died shortly after midnight on November 1, 2011 in Washington, D.C., surrounded by her family. Her story was a quintessentially American one, largely because she wrote it herself. She overcame abandonment and hardship as a young girl to become the remarkable woman she was — a warm, generous and strong woman; an intellectual; a woman who told a great joke and always got the joke; an extraordinary friend and, most of all, a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

“Dorothy is and always will be lovingly remembered by her daughter and son-in-law, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Bill Clinton; her sons and daughters-in-law, Hugh Rodham and Maria Rodham and Tony Rodham and Megan Rodham; her grandchildren, Chelsea Clinton and her husband Marc Mezvinsky, Zachary Rodham, Fiona Rodham and Simon Rodham. She leaves behind many friends from all stages and places in her life, friends from California she met in high school, friends from Little Rock and Washington with whom she explored the world, the people who were first her doctors and then became her friends at George Washington Hospital, to the people she met through her children and grandchildren who became as much her friend as theirs.

“To honor Dorothy, her family will hold a private celebration of her life for family and friends. In lieu of flowers and in line with what Dorothy would have wanted, the family have asked that any one who would want to do so would make a donation in Dorothy’s memory to George Washington Hospital, where she received excellent care and made terrific friends over many years; to the Heifer Project, her Christmas gift of choice in 2010 and an organization dear to her heart; or to a local organization meaningful to the giver that helps neglected and mistreated children, a blight Dorothy was determined to remedy until her last day because she knew too well the pain too many children suffer. Her family is and will be forever grateful for the gift of Dorothy’s life and for the memories they will treasure forever.”

Chelsea Clinton visited the George Washington University to kick off a new campaign to collect 20,000 phones as part of a CGI commitment.
